Burrow was born in Ames, Iowa, when his father was a member of the Iowa State Cyclones’ coaching staff. His father was an assistant coach for Nebraska at the time, so he went to the Rose Bowl when he was six years old. He started playing in youth football divisions not long after. Burrow began out as a quarterback since his first youth squad had no one else who could play the position, unlike his father, uncle, and brothers, who all played defense. When his father was appointed as the defensive coordinator for the North Dakota State Bison in 2003, the Burrow family relocated to Fargo, North Dakota. While Jim was in his office, future Central Michigan head coach Dan Enos said that Joe, who was seven at the time, had a football future. Burrow graduated from Athens High School in The Plains, Ohio, where he led the team to three consecutive playoff berths and the school’s first seven postseason victory. Joseph Burrow ran for 2,067 yards and 27 touchdowns throughout his career, throwing for 11,416 yards and 157 passing touchdowns. As a senior in 2014, he received the state’s Mr. Football Title as well as the Gatorade Player of the Year award. That season, he and his Bulldog colleagues went 14–1. He was also a superb basketball player, earning first-team all-state honors as a point guard in his senior year. The Athens City School District school board overwhelmingly adopted a resolution in December 2019 to rename the school’s football stadium after Burrow.
