United States Embassy to Leave Kabul in 72 Hours

Two individuals familiar with the situation told CNN on Sunday that the US is withdrawing all US employees from its embassy in Kabul over the next 72 hours, including senior officials.

Given the pace with which the Taliban has seized territory in Afghanistan in recent days, the departure of embassy staff represents a dramatic acceleration of a process that was just announced on Thursday. It’s a scenario that many State Department security officials anticipated to happen.

United States Embassy to Pull Out of Kabul Completely

The majority of American ambassadors will travel back to the United States from Kabul, the capital. According to the sources, a limited number of key people, including the country’s senior US ambassador, will stay at the Kabul airport for the time being. As a result, the US Embassy in Kabul will be closed by Tuesday, at least for the time being.

The decision to evacuate diplomatic staff comes as the Afghan government negotiates with the Taliban about the nation’s future after the terrorist organization encircled Kabul on Sunday after seizing control of every other major city in the country in only two weeks.

The negotiations between the government and the Taliban mark the end, or transformation, of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s beleaguered administration, and bring the terrorist organization closer to gaining control of the whole nation.

President Joe Biden announced on Saturday that he had authorized an additional direct deployment of 1,000 troops to Afghanistan “to ensure an orderly and safe drawdown of US and other allied personnel, as well as an orderly and safe evacuation of Afghans who assisted our troops during our mission and those at particular risk from the Taliban advance.”

According to a military official, the President’s authorisation of 5,000 soldiers on Saturday includes 1,000 troops already on the ground in the nation. The 82nd Airborne Division’s battalion of 1,000 soldiers was diverted to Kabul from their intended standby location in Kuwait. According to the military source, the Pentagon had already confirmed the arrival of 3,000 more soldiers.
